Most DJs start out playing with their parents’ records, but this was not the case for Kam. He grew up watching his older brother play records at parties and wanted to join in the fun. Kam knew that if he was ever going to become a DJ, he would have to teach himself. Messing around on his friend’s turntables after school led to DJing at house parties, which Kam used as an opportunity to hone his DJ skills in front of a live crowd.
At the age of 17, he purchased his first set of turntables and dedicated his time to mastering the crucial art of beat matching. While other DJs were scratching, Kam’s developed his signature sound of flawlessly transitioning from one song to the next, which earned him the nickname “Smooth as Silk.”
He got his first club gig at the age of 18, and soon learned how to properly warm up a crowd and then keep them dancing throughout the night. After joining Ottawa heavyweights, Ebony and Ivory Soundcrew, Kam became a solid fixture in the Ottawa music scene for the next 15 years. His versatility allows him to play in nightclubs, at corporate events and even got him the gig as one of the DJs for the Ottawa Senators. Over the last 10 years on his own, he has playing across Canada, Las Vegas and the Carribean. Kam has captured the ears of many with his various musical styles and flawless remixing.
REGGAETOWN is hosted by DJ Chris Dubbs and Fine China every Saturday from 10am – 1pm, this engaging show bridges the gap between old school and new generation Reggae. Reggaetown is a space where reggae music and reggae culture intersect, an audio environment where the sweetest ska, the hardest dancehall, the most conscious culture, and the deepest foundation all dwell, in recognition of this dynamic genre of music.
It is a radio program where like-minded reggae enthusiasts can come together to listen, meditate, discuss, and enjoy the soul of Jamaica’s heritage to the heartbeat of the riddim.
Reggaetown is a place where music reigns supreme, and we strive to understand, promote, and celebrate the fine elements of this art form.
Essentially, we are reggae…we are passionate about reggae, and we live, therefore, in Reggaetown.
